It seems like everyone knows at least one woman who has had breast cancer. Unfortunately the numbers are rising.

Aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. Breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in Hispanic women. It is the second most common cause of cancer death in white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women. (Center for Disease Control and Prevention)

There are many websites and resources out there for patients, families and survivors. Each day this week we will be featuring a company that creates items for breast cancer patients/survivors. Please show your support by visiting these fabulous companies.

I found that there are many uses for this pillow. The one I think would be of the most benefit is for the seat belt. I would love to give this to a dear friend's mom.

The Homestead Company

Posted by milk and cookeez | | 1 comments »

Do your feet need a bit of Post-Summer TLC? I know that mine do, after wearing flip flops every day this summer. I was recently given the fabulous opportunity to review a line of natural foot and hand care from The Homestead Company.

The Homestead Company is owned and operated by Melanie Nader. Together with her family, The Homestead Company focuses on nourishing your body by using quality natural ingredients in all of it's products.
The Homestead Company offers various lines for your specific needs. They offer whipped body butters, massage and skin toning oil, bath oil, and whipped body butter scrub. They even have a Homestead Baby line, which offers great natural products for the newest skin, your baby. Among the balms, oils, and butter, they offer a M's Love Baby Wipe Companion, which I will definitely have to buy for my new Mommy friends!
I was lucky enough to receive products from their Homestead Spa line. I received a large jar of Hand and Foot Scrub, made with Emu and Kukui Nut oil, a Eucalyptus and Peppermint Foot Lotion, and finally a pumice/nail brush. My feet and hands are very happy.
The Hand and Food Scrub (Retail value:$18.99) was phenomenal! I give it 2 soft and supple feet up! Really, this is the best all natural scrub I have ever used, The Homestead Company has set the bar very high. The soft fragrance of the natural butters and oils is not overpowering, but so calming and warm. There is no added fragrance, which is an enjoyable change. This butter feeling scrub is thick and not oily, although your shower will be (butters do that). You don't loose any product down the drain it all stays on your skin for a superior scrub!
On the day when I didn't scrub my feet, which wasn't many, I used the Eucalyptus and Peppermint Foot Lotion (Retail value:$11.99). You would expect that this lotion would over power you with fragrance, but it didn't, it was a soft refreshing fragrance, with wonderful skin softening abilities. It also went on very nicely and left no oily feeling at all. Perfect if you prefer lotions over heavier butters or cremes.
I definitely suggest trying The Homestead Company, if you have never tried a natural body product before make The Homestead Company your first, you will not be disappointed.

Pet Rescue is a great way to bring fun and adventure into your Wii experience. Pet Rescue has over 30 games, 50 learning lessons, and 75 fundamental skills. Along with cute animation and songs, Pet Rescue provides a fun environment for your child to learn!

Smoky Mac & Cheese Recipe

Posted by Shake Your Bon Bons | | | 4 comments »

Everyone, from kids to adults, loves to indulge in macaroni & cheese. This version features Gouda, which imparts a deeper, smoky flavor. Mac & cheese has grown up!

Ingredients
1 (16 ounce) package elbow macaroni
6 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
5 1/2 cups milk, divided
2 1/2 cups shredded smoked Gouda cheese
1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
1 1/2 cups shredded Swiss cheese
1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon bread crumbs
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
olive oil

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Bring a pot full of water to a rolling boil. Stir the macaroni into the water and return to boil. Cook and occasionally stir until the pasta has cooked through, about 8 minutes. Drain. Pour into large baking dish.
Melt the butter in a large pot. Add the flour to the melted butter and whisk continually for 1 to 2 minutes to make a roux. Whisk in 2 cups of milk until smooth. Add the remaining milk. Turn heat to medium-high. Continue cooking and stirring until thickened, but not boiling. Stir the Gouda, Cheddar, Swiss, and 1 cup Parmesan into the mixture; once the cheeses are melted completely, add to macaroni and stir to coat.
Mix 1/2 cup Parmesan, bread crumbs, and cayenne in a small bowl. Sprinkle over the macaroni and drizzle with olive oil.
Bake in the preheated oven until golden-about 30 minutes.

Join Little Lala as she takes your child on an adventure around the world to discover tasty treats to share with her friends at a party. Little Lala introduces children to different foods enjoyed in a variety of different places and cultures. This story is available as an application on your iPhone or iTouch. Simply download from the iTunes Store and you are ready to begin your adventure.

The Little Lala story and illustrations are adorable and will hold your child's interest. Not only does it entertain, but it educates your child on different places around the world. My 3 1/2 year old and 20 month old both enjoy listening to this story on my iTouch. This story will come in handy during trips to the grocery store or waiting at doctor appointments.

Little Lala works well for both readers and non-readers. Little Lala can be read to you child either by yourself or by enabling the play mode. This is a great way to take along a story to entertain your child when you are out and about without having to lug around a bunch of books. Just toss your iPhone/iTouch in your purse or diaper bag and you will always be prepared.

Little Lala also provides an ABC flashcard application. This application shows each letter with a picture. It names the letter, says the sound, and identifies the picture shown. Not only can your child learn to recognize his or her letters but he or she can learn the corresponding sound. No more missing flashcards strewn about the house! My 3 1/2 year old really enjoys this application. He "reads" along with his flashcards and is doing quite well at recognizing several sounds.

I would recommend either of these applications to anyone with young children. They are cute, fun, educational and you can't beat the price! Each Little Lala application costs only $0.99. Little Lala written by Lauren Selig is also available in regular book format for those who prefer an actual book.

Halfway to Each Other: How a year in Italy brought our family home.

Written by Susan Pohlman

"Tired of each other and completely disillusioned with married life, Susan and Tim Pohlman are wrapping up a business trip in Italy. They have just one day left to spend together with no agenda before they go home to California, to start divorce proceedings and finally move onto separate lives.

But during their last day as they walked along the Italian Riviera, Tim fantasized aloud that, perhaps, they could live there. Susan initially dismissed the notion as nonsense, but found herself inexplicably overwhelmed with a desire to give the marriage another try. Defying all logic, the couple found a school for their children and signed a lease for an apartment. Their therapist called it "an elaborate scheme of avoidance at best."

But maybe, Susan thought, a life in such a charmed setting could help them find their way back to each other."

A true story...Susan and her hubby Tim with children Matt and Katie leave LA to spend a year in Italy. Not only are they dealing with a broken marriage and tween children but living in a non-english speaking country. How brave!

Through lots of trial and error and relying on each other the family learns a whole new way of life. The modern day conveniences are long forgotten as the family is introduced to public transportation, fresh food cooking (no fast food here), gypsies, new customs, a lack of electronics, new friends and a new school system.

Relationships are mended and sweet family moments are captured as the family lives and travels through Italy truly appreciating what they have in each other.

The way Susan writes about the beauty of Italy transports the reader to a different place. Not only is the book inspirational but it's funny! The boarding of the train in chapter 44 will have you rolling on the floor.

Peach Cobbler

Posted by The Momma | | | 2 comments »

I thought I'd sneak in one more summer recipe before we really get into fall. Temps are still pushing 100+ here in Texas, so it still feels like summer to me! Don't forget the vanilla ice cream!

INGREDIENTS
1/2C butter
1C flour
1C sugar
1tsp baking powder
1C milk
21oz can peach pie filling*
*Since peaches were on sale I sunstituted about 3C of peeled, sliced peaches flavored with 2tbsp brown sugar and 1tsp vanilla

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350. Place butter in a 9x13in pan and melt in oven while it's preheating. In a medium bowl, mix flour, sugar and baking powder. Stir in milk. Remove pan of meltd butter from oven and pour mixture into pan, but DO NOT STIR (it's the recipe yelling, not me!!). Spread the pie filling (or your fresh on-sale peaches) onto the batter WITHOUT stirring. Bake for 50-60 minutes, until the fruit is bubbly and the batter is set and golden brown.

I'm not generally big on fruit desserts (I'm a chocolate girl), but there's just something about peach cobbler that gets me! Enjoy!

Lily Padz

Posted by Mom to 3 Rug Rats | | , | 1 comments »

Breastfeeding is a wonderful thing. Unsightly breast pad lines are not! It is so hard finding comfortable breastfeeding pads that stop leaks and don't leave lines under your clothes. This is where Lily Padz comes in.

Lily Padz are different from any other nursing pads. They work by applying gentle pressure so that leaks are prevented not just contained. The non-absorbent Lily Padz keeps clothing dry and can be used in a variety of situations including swimming and going braless. Traditional nursing pads cannot offer that kind of protection. Lily Padz are completely washable and can be reused over and over. They are invisible under clothing so no more noticeable nursing pad lines!

Lily Padz are made of a lightweight flexible silicone material that allows for breathabilty and invisibility. They adhere to the breast so no more sleeping with uncomfortable nursing bras!

I wish I would have known about Lily Padz when I was breastfeeding my kids. But now that I'm expecting my third baby, I know Lily Padz will be my go to nursing pad! They are comfortable and easy to apply. I don't fear that they will dislodge and come off. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who is considering breastfeeding.

Lily Padz retail for under $25.00. To find out more about Lily Padz, visit their website here.

How cool is this! My neice and nephew would love to have these in their lunch boxes. I choose the Amazing Animal Facts;

PenPal Notes

Are you looking for a fun and educational way to add a little message to your child's lunch bag? Or a great activity to bring along to a restaurant? Then you will love PenPal Notes. With PenPal Notes you send your child on an adventure with a Panda named Tej.

My daughter Isabella (age 6) and I chose the Dinosaur Days Series of PenPal Notes to review. There are 40 cards in our box. The cards are the size of a postcard. Each card is numbered, which I think is fantastic. The series we chose follows Tej on his adventure while he learns about Dinosaurs. As your child reads about Tej's adventure he or she is learning all sorts of fun and educational facts about Dinosaurs.

As you can see from the picture above there is a Dear_________. This is so you can write in your child's name.

Pictured above is the back of the card. There is a spot for you to write your child a note. Or you could have your child write what they learned from the adventure each day.

PenPal Notes are a fun and educational way to get your child excited about reading. The PenPal Notes would be great for the lunch box, reading at home or taking to a restaurant. There are many more PenPal Notes available, such as Traveling Taste Buds, Discover Africa, Meet the U.S. Presidents and Proverbs.
