Ice Cream In A Bag

Posted by Shake Your Bon Bons | | | 6 comments »

Since last Monday was Memorial Day-and the unofficial start of summer-I wanted to share this quick, easy and tasty recipe with everyone. It is very easy to adapt this recipes for different flavors and can be used with fruit juice for a tasty sorbet.

Ingredients/Supplies

  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup half & half
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla (or preferred extract)
  • 6 tablespoons rock salt
  • 1 pint-size Ziploc bag
  • 1 gallon-size Ziploc bag
  • Ice cubes
Directions
1. Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt and seal
2. Put half & half, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.
3. Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal it again carefully.
4. Shake until the mixture is ice cream, which takes about 5 minutes.
5. Wipe off the top of the small bag, then open it carefully.
6. Eat and enjoy!

This recipe as it is will make about 1 serving. If you wish to make 2, simply double the sugar, half and half and extract.

I am so excited about this months freebie. It is called Honey Luv, and these little bears are sure to melt your heart! Here is a Sneak Peek.

Photobucket

You can find this months freebie as well as detailed instruction on how to install the design by clicking on the above design or this link. My Life ‘Xpressed created this freebie using artwork by Trina Clark. If any graphic designers out there would like one of your kits to be hosted at Mammalicious Finds please e-mail me at Mylife.Xpressed@gmail.com.

In this months tutorial I am going to tell you how to backup your template. It is important that we go over this because before you start messing with your HTML code you should ALWAYS save a backup onto your hard drive. If you don’t, eventually you will loose everything and have to start from scratch, which is something that has probably happened to all of us at some point or another and we can all agree it is not fun. I will also need this step so I can refer to it in future tutorials.

To Backup your template.

1. Click on Customize in the top right hand corner. You are now in your add and arrange page elements. Click on Edit HTML.

2. Under Backup and Restore template there is a link that says Download Full Template. Click on it.

3. In the next pop up box click save.

4. If you wish you can rename your document or you can leave it with the name that is assigned. I am going to title my backup “BLOG TUTORIAL” Regardless of if you decide to rename it or not the important thing is to make sure your file is in a place you will be able to find it later. Notice what file it is being stored into before you save. Click Save.

Now your template is saved! If something goes wrong while trying to edit your html code you can upload your saved template. Lets go over how to do this.

To upload a saved template -

1. Click on Customize in the top right hand corner. You are now in your add and arrange page elements. Click on Edit HTML.

2. Under Backup and Restore template there is an empty box with a browse button. Click on the Browse button.
3. Find the file where you previously saved your blog and click on the desired template upload.

4. Click Upload.

That concludes this months tutorial. I will use this tutorial for reference in future tutorials when I teach you how to tweak and change things in your html code. If you found this tutorial helpful please leave a comment. Some of the things we will be discussing in the future are post signatures, border boxes, setting up a business on your blog, and many others. If there is something specific you would like to see a tutorial written on please feel free to e-mail me MyLife.Xpressed@gmail.com and I will see what I can do. :- )

Please stop by my shop and look around,
Julie, My Life ‘Xpressed

Hip Hip Hooray! Mammaliciousfinds.com is now open!
We've expanded to a full fledged site that incorporates this blog and our shopping site as well.
We will continue to post product reviews, features, give aways and parties on this blog but you can now also visit us on our main site. Everything is linked up so you shouldn't get too lost!
Take a look and let us know what you think!
When you are linking to MF, you can either link to the main site or the blog.

I was a baaaaaad girl and missed my post last month. I do have a pretty good excuse, though. We we're a bit unexpectedly and quickly uprooted from Florida to Texas. In the confusion of planning, packing and moving I completely forgot! So, to make up for it you get double the goodness from me this month!! This is another CrockPot wonder and a little homage to our new hometown of San Antonio. The main dish is a salsa chicken that I turn the leftovers into soup! This recipe came from one of my favorite blogs A Year of CrockPotting. I've tweaked it a little, cause what fun is follwing directions!!

Salsa Chicken
6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (frozen is fine!)
1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
1 16oz jar of your favorite salsa
2C of frozen corn

Put the chicken in first and then top with the rest of the ingredients. Cook on low for 6-9 hours, depending on how big the chicken pieces are or if they are frozen. I like to serve this topped with Mexican shredded cheese on a bed of rice.

Ready to turn the leftovers into something FAB? Shred up what's left of the chicken before you put it all away (the chicken is so tender you can do this with one fork!). Stow everything safely in a sealed container until your ready for soup!

Salsa Chicken Soup
container of leftovers (thaw if frozen)
2C of chicken broth
1tsp chili powder
1tsp cumin

Stir everything together in a pot and heat on medium until warm. If I happen to have extra rice hanging out in the fridge I toss that in to. And of course this simply MUST be topped with cheese!

I hope you'll try these recipes soon and love them as much as I do!!

The Side-Yard Superhero
Written by Rick D. Niece, Ph.D.

The Side-Yard Superhero is a memoir written by Rick Niece. The book centers around his childhood in Degraff, Ohio. Degraff is a typical small town, everyone knows everyone and is friendly. It's safe, people were good, you help out your neighbor, one might even compare it the Andy Griffith Show. Yet this was Rick's life and he takes us on a journey of laughter and even a few tears.

The book is set up in a flashback style, he recounts his time in the 50's and 60's when he was a paper boy and some of the interesting yet amazing relationships he formed along the way. Rick introduces us to a quite a few of Degraff's finest including Fern Burdett, Miss Lizzie, Danny Coonzy and Frank Tully. Probably the most significant and poignant was his bond with Bernie Jones, a teenage boy with cerebral palsy. Bernie is confined to a wheelchair and spends much of the day outside. Each day Bernie waits for his "Rickie Boy" to deliver the paper and read to him the Dick Tracy comic. The two experience many adventures together, some pretty comical!

" A newspaper route was the first true love of my life. With my faithfulsleek-flanked Dalmatian companion, Lady, gliding stride by stridebeside my bright red, twenty-four-inch Huffy, I raced the streets andsidewalks of DeGraff to deliver newspapers, perfectly pitching thehand-rolled papers onto patiently waiting front porches. If deliveringnewspapers had been an Olympic event, I might have qualified asDeGraff’s first medal recipient, Lady sharing the platform with me.Life in DeGraff was as perfect as any boy could ask for. And DeGraffwas home to Bernie Jones."

I have to say I really enjoyed this book. It made me laugh and I did have to grab a tissue every now and again, but don't let that stop you from reading it. Rick's writing style and descriptive detail paint a beautiful picture of boyhood friendship and innocence. I'm looking forward to part two and three of Rick's trilogy.

More about the author...
Rick Niece received a Bachelor of Science through Ohio State University and went on to receive his Masters of Education and eventually a Doctor of Philosophy in 1988. Rick began a teaching career teaching English, speech and drama at a public high school. One thing led to another as they always do and Rick became the assistant principal and later on the curriculum director for the central office administration. Since 1985 Rick has been a professor, academic dean and president of University of the Ozarks. Rick and his wife Sheree' are proud parents to 675 students!

real moms * real experts * real advice

Shari Criso knows babies! She is supporting as well as teaching mommies world wide how to be successful with breastfeeding and introducing them to tried and true techniques and products to help you with this challenge. Shari brings her education, training and real world experience as a certified nurse midwife, board lactation consultant and mother of two little girls. Some mothers have no difficulties with breast feeding but from what I've heard as a mom myself, it seems like most have some kind issues whether it's difficulties with positioning the baby, latching, engorgement, soreness, the list goes on!

How many of you attended a breast feeding class before your baby was born? Not me! I attended a birthing class where breast feeding was covered but certainly not expanded on. If I had it to do all over again I really wish I would have taken the time to educate myself on breastfeeding, because I like so many others had problems. I guess we all expect it to come naturally, the baby latches on, drinks their fill, burps and then is off to sleep. What a joke! Don't even get me started on nursing bras, there was no help what so ever!

Shari's dream was to help moms like you and me with all of these difficulties; she opened The Birth Boutique in NJ. Moms have access to products, education classes, bra fittings, and more. Shari has expanded her business and is now offering two dvd sets that anyone can order online: Simply Breastfeeding and Breastpumps and Briefcases.

I viewed the Simply Breastfeeding dvd set. This two disc set delves into the following topics:

1.) Amazing Benefits For Both You & Your Baby - that You Might Not Have Heard Before

2.) Exactly How to Hold Your Baby - with real Mom & Baby demonstrations

3.) How to Prevent the Unnecessary Nipple Pain You Hear About in Other Mom's Horror Stories

4.) Exactly How Much Milk Your Baby Needs Each Day During the First Few Weeks, As Well As Signs and Clues for You to Follow to Make Sure Your Baby is Getting Enough Milk

5.) How and When to Give Your Baby a Bottle

6.) How to Avoid the Biggest Mistake that Most Parents Make in the Hospital...

Please remember that not every nurse, doctor, or "expert" will agree with everything that is mentioned or taught on the dvd's. The techniques that Sharon uses to help moms are techniques that she's used, other moms have used and have been successful with. Everyone has their own opinion about what is best for baby. As moms and dads you will have to decide what works for your baby, and what works with one my baby might not work for another baby.

I learned quite a bit from Simply Breastfeeding and certainly would have applied some of the techniques if I had known about them to begin with! Especially when it came to the positioning of my baby for nursing. I also learned that it's normal for babies to sleep and not eat much during the first days. You're always taught that the baby needs to eat-the baby needs to eat, what they really want to do is sleep! They "wake up" typically your first day or two home, when your milk comes in. My hubby and I wondered what happened to our son when we came home. He was a sleeping little angel in the hospital and when we brought him home the first night we were confused as to who replaced him with a red faced, screaming baby... let's just say I think we were all crying trying to figure out what was wrong. What we were feeling was normal, my son's crying was normal and our reaction was normal.

Shari has a relaxed approach to her teaching and is very easy to listen to. The video is set up as class style format with actual pregnant mommies attending. Shari leads the class and you become one of her "students" in the privacy of your own home. Sit back, relax and take notes! Even if you've already had baby number one and weren't as successful with breastfeeding as you would have liked, these videos might help you with baby number two or three or four.

Shari was recently honored as the 2009 Mom's Choice Award Mom Entrepreneur of the Year. Shari is one of the featured lactation consultants for Breastfeeding.com and has been featured in Celebrity Parents online magazine and on Fox & Friends.

Tie Dyeing Tutorial

Posted by The Craftaholic | | | 1 comments »

So I have to say that I totally love the idea of tye dyed clothing. I know for some of you it may seem a bit too "60s" for you, but think about it: you can make some cute tie dyed onsies, baby socks and hats! Think of how cute your little one would look with a tie dyed onsie and matching socks! Adorable.

So, a quick tutorial for dying clothing:

It's really simple. You'll need a pot, a cup of salt, and a packet of RIT Dye, and some rubber bands.

Take your garment to be dyed, and Twist it up
Wrap your rubber bands around the clothing
Heat up some water, enough for the clothing to be saturated and "swim around" in
In the pot, add 1 cup of salt, and the packet of RIT Dye. Then, predissolve it with a bit of warm water.
Once the water (which you've been heating) is almost boiling, add it to the pot and stir
Then add your garment!
Stir it up, baby! You want to make sure it's completely saturated with dye.
Leave it in until the garment reaches your desired color, up to 30 minutes while you bring it to a simmer. But honestly, I left mine in for about 10 minutes.
Then, take it out, and rinse it in cold water in the sink.
If you have a washing machine, you could just throw it in a cold water washing cycle, but alas, I live in a New York City apartment.
To dry, I have mine on the heater. You could also hang it up, of course, provided you have a nice backyard or something like that. But again, me and this New York City apartment.
This is so much fun! And so quick!

Enjoy!

I did not know Post-it made pockets to hang on the wall for organizing. I love the colors!

Post-It notes is the one product I know we have all used. I use them all the time to make my to do list and grocery list. One of my favorite uses for Post-It notes is placing one on the cover of one of my cooking magazines. Then I write down the page number of all the recipes I would like to try. And it lets me know the magazine is a keeper.

Post-It brand has a wide variety of products that are convenient for us to use in our everyday life. You can see their whole line of products on their website. While researching information for this review I found that they have these great Post-It Sketch Pads. Which I know my girls would love. You can find their full line of kids products here.

Great news!

I'm happy to read that one of my favorite products is made from recycled paper. And that you can also recycle your post-it notes. Below is some information from the Post-It website about sustainability.

Functionality meets sustainability

All Post-it® Notes and Easel Pads are recyclable. Please recycle.

All Post-it® Notes and Easel Pads are made with paper from well-managed forests where trees are replanted.

All Post-it® Notes sold in the U.S.A. are made in the U.S.A.

Recycled Post-it® Notes and Easel Pads are made from a minimum of 30 percent postconsumer content.

Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies

Posted by Shake Your Bon Bons | | | 4 comments »

What could be more fun than to spend a Saturday afternoon baking sugar cookies with your family? Looking back on my childhood, some of my fondest memories were of Saturday afternoons spent rolling out cookie dough and getting to choose which shapes I would cut out and decorate. The truly fun part was after the cookies were baked and cooled. Then we got to play in icings and glazes in assorted rainbow colors. Then there were the colored sugars and jimmies and dragees that topped our edibles work of art. It's no wonder that I decided to open a sweets boutique!
This recipe is an old family recipe from my mother's Swedish ancestors. It was a family favorite growing up, hopefully your family will enjoy it as well!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • Additional sugar

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a mixing bowl, cream butter, shortening and sugar.
  2. Add egg and vanilla; mix well.
  3. Combine flour, baking powder and baking soda; gradually add to the creamed mixture.
  4. Shape into 1-in. balls. Roll in sugar. Place on greased baking sheet; flatten with a glass.
  5. Bake at 350 degrees F for 10-12 minutes.
**If you wish to cut your cookies out, allow dough to chill for no less than an hour (preferably overnight). Dust your hands, rolling pin & surface and cutters generously with flour. Roll to desired thickness and cut into your preferred shapes. You can sprinkle with sugar before baking or use any variety of glazes or frostings to decorate with once cooled.

**Please remember that oven temperatures vary. It may not take the full 10-12 minutes for your cookies to bake.
